Bob And All Things Digital

Well, it happened, Hillary has the delegates to be the Democratic nominee for the 2016 election, first woman to head a major party ticket. Now, Bernie, it's time for you to gather your flock and decide where and how you want to have the biggest impact on the coming Democratic Convention and the party's platform. You need to begin planning how you're going to move Hillary further to the left and Hillary has to decide how far to the left she's willing to go to bridge the gap to Bernie's people.

Meanwhile we have the Republicans running to the right and jumping off a cliff over there.

In the middle we have Barnum and Bailey Circus, featuring Donald Trump for 2016.

Who could ask for more?

One thing that continues to fascinate me about Bob is his fascination with digital devices. He did not have a career that would lend itself to being proficient with such devices.

When time came that daughter introduced us to the iPhone idea he was all for it, me, not so much. He wakes up every morning with his mind a blank screen. Never remembers from one day to the next what he did the day before on these devices. He has an iPhone, and iPad, and an iMac computer. He's clueless about all of them.

He's managed to grasp how to get to his lab results. He's got that. He's definitely got that down cold.

I have the iMac set up with the obituary pages from every place we've ever lived. Every morning he gets up and checks obituaries.

Next he hits Facebook. He does not type so he never responds to anything or anybody. He just scrolls and looks. I have him set up as 'friends' with all his nieces and nephews back in Texas, plus some old railroad buddies, and a couple from his high school.

He's pretty good at looking up odd phone numbers. He has a thing about telephone calls that we don't recognize the number. He chases all those down on the computer.

I'm hesitate to click on anything I'm not sure of but not Bob. He throws caution to the wind and clicks on everything. I frequently have to get him out of some mess he's gotten himself into but he never gives up. The next day he's right back at it.

He never deletes or updates anything. Sometimes I do it, sometimes daughter does it but we have to spend some time cleaning up and updating the devices he uses.

We laugh about it but we wouldn't have it any other way. I'm delighted that he wakes up every morning eager to go at it again.

  1. Yes, Barnum and Bailey. Definitely. Ken's a little more proficient on his iMac than Bob, but he frustrates the bejeesus out of me because he won't use common sense when trying to solve a computer problem. He immediately blames it on the computer and walks away in frustration. He's not into reading what pull-down tabs have to offer.

    1. I don't have a lot of patience but Bob has less when it comes to digital devices. I suspect he doesn't know about pull-down tabs.

  2. It's a good thing/sign that Bob is still interested in the world and his devices are helping with that. Gotta' count all the small blessing you can for as long as you can. By the way, I often look up phone numbers I don't recognize too. I can't tell you why. Maybe Bob and I can call it a hobby and start a club. LOL

Barnum and Bailey definitely has a thumb print all over this election.

    1. Oh believe me, Bob very much has a will to live and that is so wonderful. He swears he's not dying before his drivers license expires in 2021. His twin talked all the time about wanting to die and he did. I'm so thankful Bob is not that way. I'm also glad to know someone else looks up phone numbers. I just roll my eyes when he does that. He has good days and bad days. Today has been very good, even a trip to Costco without me having a melt down.

  3. I also look up the unknown phone numbers - my inbox is a mystery to me, so messages are never heard. I can't say much about DH and his devices ...

  4. What a funny and wonderful post, Linda. It is good to live with someone who has a zest for life, just think what a downer the opposite would be. Looking up phone numbers? I didn't know that could be done, I'll have to give it a whirl.

    1. Absolutely, I don't think I could stand it if he was negative and had to be pushed to do things. He's definitely still in the game.

  5. That's quite impressive that Bob is interested in technology. It is a great hobby, and can provide hours of entertainment.

I like my Mac. I have an old iPad but decided not to replace it. We really don't use it that much. When we travel, I take my laptop.

    1. Anything that keeps people connected to the world is good I think. His twin wouldn't try anything.

I love technology too. Hurray for Bob.

  7. I have a 90+ relative in a Midwest state who moved last year to a a very nice Asst. Living residence. Unfortunately they do not have supportive helpers for residents to use a computer unlike where she previously lived in a different state. She has short term memory issues but not as much as you describe your husband having. She would so like to have access to using a computer but needs assist. She has aids for hearing loss but they're not always effective and increasingly so on the telephone I notice. I think digital use as you describe would be really beneficial to her if she could have the help and oversight she'd need. I laud you and family for providing your husband this stimulating digital outlet.
