Another Grocery Store Trip

The ice maker died deader than a hammer during the day on Friday. That is a serious problem around this house because I use a lot of ice. Let me repeat that, I use a LOT of ice. Refrigerators in these apartments are not equipped with ice makers. Years ago we went with cabinet top ice makers.

This would be our third and the others came from Fred Meyer so off we went to get a new one.

I looked online and saw they had the model we wanted so what could go wrong? As you can see the two models are not at all the same.

It does irritate me when stores picture a product as in store but you arrive to a different model. It was Friday afternoon late, the last day of the 'sale,' and this was the last one. Because the product was different than the picture online they gave us an additional discount.

In the end we took it and headed home. Once we'd wrestled it in the house it had to be set up and the old one removed. It was then we remembered jihadist recycling son Rodger would be here on Sunday. The old one needed to disappear quickly or we would be forced to let him add it to the already significant amount of stuff in his garage waiting to go to the proper recycling center.

By this time my tongue was hanging out but Bob was determined to press on. He rested a while, got a second wind of energy and we were off to the trash disposal in our complex to heave the thing into the crusher.

It's been quite a week. From comments on previous posts I've been reminded of Bob's compromised immune system, the reason we keep him away from people wearing skin. He's done so well because we're careful about too much human contact.

Three suggestions have promise I think. A mom/pop place to eat lunch often enough he could get to know and chat with the wait staff, a coffee shop, and a dog.

This morning I am beat because this is far more activity than I like. Son Rodger and his family will be here on Sunday. I'm going to savor today and hope I don't have to roll the wheels on the car today.

Ever have a day when you just want to stay at home and see no one?

  1. I have MANY days where I want to stay home and see no one. I think I would make a great hermit. I didn't know there was such a thing as a countertop ice maker. That's good to know for when our fridge ice maker quits, as it surely will. Getting rid of old appliances is a challenge. I hope Rodger snows up tomorrow for the major recycling venture!

    1. Last night I was mentally drained and Bob was still talking away. He found stimulation in the day and I was drained.

  2. I never knew such a thing existed, but a quick search proves there are all kinds of them! (My learn something new for today)
I hope something is open tomorrow when your son comes. Sunday though ...

    1. We would probably keep a counter type ice maker even if we had one in our refrigerator. They're very handy.

  3. I often want to go no where, see no one. I'm an introvert. that's how we roll.
I didn't know about counter top ice makers either. Always good to learn something new.

    1. These counter top ice makers are nice if you have a lot of company, have a large family, or even might work well at your cabins.

  4. I have days where I want to stay in and days when I want to go out. I need a balance. Tomorrow I stay home because I have a busy week coming up.

I didn't know they have counter top ice makers. I use the old fashioned ice cube trays and even those are a recent thing since I started making smoothies. I'm just not an ice person. One time someone came over and was looking for my ice so he could have some ice water and he couldn't get over the fact that I didn't have any. I have a Pur filter pitcher with cold water in the ref. but that apparently isn't cold enough for you "icy" people. LOL

    1. When I was a child and we sat down to eat 'supper' after my father had worked a long hot day on the railroad tracks he wanted iced tea, a lot of it, and heavy on the ice. I suppose that's how I developed this life long thing for ice.

  5. Oh yes, I have those kinds of days too. I've never heard of an ice maker like that. I just assumed all refrigerators came with icemakers or trays. I used to have lots of trays.

    1. We have trays but they are such a pain when you use as much ice as I do. The countertop ice maker is so much more convenient and easier to use.

    1. What I need is a bored extrovert to entertain Bob a few hours every week.

  7. Never knew about the counter top ice makers. Definitely need plenty of ice with this warm weather we are getting.

Yes, I definitely have those days where I am happy to stay home and see no one.

The suggestions for Bob to have more people contact sound good. Except the dog! We always had a dog; wonderful companions! But the responsibility is something to think about as we age. We both agreed after our last one died, that he would indeed be the last one.

    1. I want another dog so bad but so far have been able to keep my senses and not get one. There's a lot to think about in having a pet as we age.

    1. I am amazed you were able to stay in the house for 9 days. As extroverted as you are I would have thought that impossible. Of course you were surrounded with people during that time.

  9. A counter top ice maker is new to me also. Hope it works just fine for you. Nice of you to notice the difference and get the reduction.
Lucky me, when I have those days, I just do it. One of the advantages of single living.
