I wear athletic shoes every day because I'm more secure on my feet. I really do not want to fall. Apparently there's a lot of older women wearing them for the same reason.
I also wear them because that's about all I can find for casual shoes since I wear size 13 AAA.
I knit a lot of socks, and I think hand knit socks look dreadful with athletic shoes. This means my sock drawer if full of nice hand knit socks I no longer wear.
I'm always on the lookout for solid colors but I'm seldom successful. These navy ones trimmed in pink are fun unless all your pants are black. I only have a choice of maybe two brands so I pretty much have to take what I can find.
My favorite casual shoe is Keds but they have absolutely no arch support and I've not had much success adding support.
It's a bummer, but actually doesn't even register on the life scale of 1-10 with 10 being the worst. It's an annoyance, a gravel in my shoe, that sort of thing.
Have you tried getting custom inserts for your Keds? My specialty shoe store and my bone doctor both sells them. It involves walking on a mat barefoot and a computer program maps out what you need, then a company makes them to order. Worth every penny which is around a hundred and I know four people who have gotten them plus me.
ReplyDeleteI have the same issue with trying to finding plain athletic shoes---so many bright colors!---but my specialty shoe store carries some silver Mogos that have worked out well.(You have to make an appointment for a fitting, recommendation and then go back when the order comes in for another fitting. All the foot doctors in town recommend the place or I wouldn't know about it.)
The Keds are less than $30 so it seems a little out of line to put $100 inserts in them. The athletic shoes I'm wearing are very comfortable, just not the right colors.
DeleteThe inserts can be moved from shoe to shoe as easily as putting on a sock...turns a cheat pair of shoes into an expensive pair of shoes in terms of support.
DeleteI've always liked Keds, too. Don't find them too often around here, though. I like tennis shoe flats. I've worn out a few pair and only have one right now.
ReplyDeleteAthletic shoes feel klunky, Keds don't, but I have to have some arch support. My feet are long enough with adding a lot of additional shoe so that it looks like I'm wearing boxes.
DeleteSame problem no cute shoes. I was able to order a solid black pair like the blue and pink. I have that same exact shoe. I have serious orthotics specially made and I still find the heavy duty shoes are the only ones I can wear. Tried other shoes (not cute ones) and they just were not as good for my feet
ReplyDeleteI think we're stuck. I hope athletic shoes remain in style.
DeleteOh my goodness, that is annoying, isn't it. New Balance sneakers run narrow. They have size 13, but only AA, not AAA. Thank goodness athletic shoes are in style. They are practical, comfortable, and stylish too.
ReplyDeleteIt's very annoying. I've tried New Balance but they're too wide.
DeleteNow you could be like me and have absolutely no good sense of color coordination . Then you could wear your sacks and shoes together.!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is true. I do think just about anything goes these days but not for this old lady.
DeleteMy ortho doc told me to ONLY wear New Balance athletic shoes.
ReplyDeleteThey have good support, are comfy and I feel very safe in them.
Other than wearing white athletic shoes all winter, which I think looks dorky, they work for me. :-)
New Balance shoes are too wide for me, I've tried them. I can hardly force myself into a pair of dress shoes anymore. The athletic shoes are so much safer.
DeleteMy son in law was wearing a pair of New Balance shoes he had been given. They were very shiny. When I remarked how good they looked, he told me that the KuKluxKlan wear New Balance shoes so they are no longer "the thing," but he had been given this pair and he didn't mind.
DeleteOh, I think finding the right shoes is up there pretty high on my scale. I have the opposite problem - I need wide shoes because of my bunion, and I need support because of previous bouts of plantar fasciitis and I use arch supports in all of my shoes. I wear athletic shoes almost all of the time. Nike is my preferred brand.
ReplyDeleteI used to have many pairs of shoes in many colors. Today, one pair is enough if they fit well and are comfortable. My priorities have changed.
DeleteI wear my colorful hand knitted socks with my athletic shoes and don't give a flip whether others think I look dorky or not. Actually, the socks are hidden by my pant legs most of the time. Also, I think everyone else is too busy worrying about how he or she looks to give a thought to how I look. That's how I justify my lack of fashion sense, anyway!
ReplyDeleteIf you can do it so can I!! If you can keep Portland weird in Maine I can keep Portland weird in Oregon.
DeleteI agree with Jean R. I have orthotics I paid an arm and a foot for about 15 years ago from an orthopedist but they are still good and make any shoe a perfect fit. Well they don't work too good in heels:) A great investment. I have a skinny foot also. Eventually that lack of support will lead to a very painful plantar fasciitis. You don't want to go there. I prefer Reebok classic for their lack of support with doesn't interfere with the orthotics correction.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt I'll be sticking with my athletic shoes. At this age I value comfort more than fashion. So far I haven't needed orthotics but that day may home.
DeleteI wear my tennies 95 percent of the time and flat Mary Janes with good support the rest. I'm too awkward and would prefer not to fall! GREAT socks!
ReplyDeleteI would love to find some Mary Janes but most shoes aren't made in a size 13.
DeleteI have a problem finding comfortable shoes. I wear ugly, black shoes, but they are the only thing I can find. One day, I noticed my doctor was wearing the same shoes. She said that she just tells them to bring her the ugliest shoes in the store. :( Gotta have comfort.
