Time To Embrace The New

You are 'old' if you focus on having a daily BM and talk about it. What about tomorrow, ever thought about that possibility I say.

It's time for me to embrace the new. It's too easy to settle into the old and comfortable. I'm completely burned out on political news. There has to be something more to life.

I'm keenly interested in Millennials. I want to get some idea of what we can expect as they become the movers and shakers in our country.

News is a big part of my life. I'm addicted to news. It's easy to assume the Millennials are detached because they don't read newspapers or watch TV. I read an interesting article on How Millennials Get News that gives me hope.

"This generation tends not to consume news in discrete sessions or by going directly to news providers. Instead, news and information are woven into an often continuous but mindful way that Millennials connect to the world generally, which mixes news with social connection, problem solving, social action, and entertainment."

"Virtually all Millennials, for instance, regularly consume a mix of hard news, lifestyle news, and practical "news you can use." Millennials are more likely to report following politics, crime, technology, their local community and social issues than report following culture and celebrities, or style and fashion. Fully 45 percent of these young adults regularly follow five or more "hard news" topics. Sixty nine percent of Millennials get news at least once a day."

Today I began purging my news feeds of polls and election news, now what? That's a big chunk of what I've consumed on a daily basis. After the election what do I want to know, what sites will I follow?

I'm currently sampling two 'new to me' sites:

Newsy talks to you so you need to wear earbuds. Appears, from my limited experience, to be more bite size news.

Stitcher I like a lot. It's also audio.

Other sites I'm going to take a look at either for myself or to recommend to my children are, Spotify,  Wattpad, SoundCloud, and Redditt.

I've never done much with YouTube so I plan to explore it further.

My body may get old but I don't intend to let my mind.

  2. You certainly keep yourself up to date with society. There's no denying it. I'm still in such a state of paralytic terror about the election that I can't seem to think beyond Nov. 8.

    1. My life is so restricted I have to work at being relevant when I happen to have a chance to get out in the real world.

  3. I've never heard of any of those websites you listed.

    1. I love politics but sometimes it smothers me. When I feel smothered I know it is time to come up for air.

    1. I do love good writing, which I often find from the New York Times.

    2. Nothing I've seen today meets your requirement for writing. I'm an audio person. You must be visual. You better hang onto the NYT as long as you can.

  5. A good change in life keeps us in the game. A key point you make is t not focus on the "me". Tell us later on what you think of these news sources.

  6. These aren't precisely news sources, although they do contain "news" -- more social and cultural than political. Ones I really like (and which all can be followed as Twitter feeds) are Quillette, Twisted Sifter (a best-of-the-web site), Brain Pickings (includes lit and film reviews, poetry, etc.) and JSTOR Daily, which you might like for its connections to academia combined with nice, clear writing.

  7. I hope we do see a major change in news reporting. What we have now doesn't work - for me at least. I'll be reading that site you posted to see what Millennials know that I don't.

  8. I'm definitely a visual person; it is how I process information the best. When I was working, by commute time was about 30 minutes. I would turn on NPR and keep up to date on the latest news. Now that I'm retired, the internet is my main source of news.

Interesting about the millennials and how they get their news. I had no idea.

Can't wait for November 9th. So glad when it will be over.

    1. Though I prefer audio I read a lot too. I suppose the two audio sites I like appeal to millennials because they are almost always wearing ear buds. They can walk and listen to the news and podcasts as opposed to having to stop to read. We're living in an interesting world.

  9. I read the same thing about how millennial get the news and also found it encouraging. I can't wait until entertainment/celebrity news fades out of favor.

  10. I am really enjoying my ostrich status right now and fast forward past anything I find objectionable--which is a lot. If the news is in printed form, I just quit reading. Great having this control. I can actually feel my sanity returning. Maybe when this is all over, I'll get back to all the news--maybe not.

    1. I'm making a real effort to expose myself to more news than government and politics, to read more culture sites. My focus is too narrow.
