Looking Up

Things are looking up. Today our high will be 67 degrees, that's my kind of weather. A little early to feel fall in the air but I can pretend. I love this kind of weather. Woke up to a little fog and drizzle (Oregon sunshine) which was great.

Took Bob in for a medical appointment at 9:00 a.m. then went on to get haircuts for both of us.

We're back home and hoping to collect ourselves again after the events of this past week.

I've been thinking about a press subject we've not been seeing much about, presidential hair styles. Barack Obama's hair looks the same every day. That will not be the case if Hillary Clinton becomes president. Her hair will be the subject of a lot of talk.

I've had my own issues with Hillary's hair through the years. For all her many talents I don't think she was gifted with hair styling. I seriously doubt there's going to be a line item budget for daily styling of the president's hair.

I was embarrassed for her some of the time she was Secretary of State. I wondered why Bill or Chelsea didn't take her aside and say "you need a haircut and style."

We can tell by pictures of her as a young woman that hair is just not that important in her world but I'm afraid it's going to have to become important. I don't think presidents are allowed to have bad hair days.

I don't think I've ever seen a woman that hair style made so much difference. When her hair is fixed she looks vibrant and alive, when her hair is not styled she looks much older than her years and sick.

This is another area where women are judged and men are not. What do you think about presidential hair styles.

  1. I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I'm tired of women's appearance being such an issue. Can't we just acknowledge that she's one of the sharpest knives in the drawer? Did anyone worry about Truman's hair? I became annoyed at the commentary about the appearance of some of the women athletes at the Olympics. But on the other hand - Come on, Hillary! Get a new hairstyle!

    1. Fair or not she will be covered differently by the press. I have no problem with the style she's wearing now. Her hair was beautiful the night of her nomination. I don't cringe much when she keeps it the length it is now and it's not styled. I cringe a lot when she grows it long and it isn't styled. Rumors about her failing health will go viral if she neglects her hair. Not fair? Perhaps so but that's how life as the first woman president will be.

  2. She has had some bad hair styles but haven't we all at one point in time? She just gets photographed more often than the average person so we tend to forget our own. But you are right, if she is elected her hair and clothes will be critiqued up one side and down the other. When she was the SOS she had such a gurgling schedule I could see how her hair got so bad...no time for a good haircut and style. Remember also it was her daughter who wanted her to grow it out for her wedding, which wasn't a good style for her at all.

    1. I didn't know about the wedding. I think long hair is seldom flattering to women our age. Yes, we all get bad haircuts and have bad hair days but we aren't daily in front of cameras as the face the world associates with the USA. It is true she had a grueling schedule as SOS.

  3. I had to laugh. I was just talking about this earlier today. Men can get wrinkles, bald and overweight and get away with it in the public eye. However there seems to be a different standard for women. Not fair! Nancy Pelosi is 76 years old, for example. Would she still be where she is today if she had not had "work done"?

I remember when Hillary was secretary of state and she had a longish flip hairdo. Not one of my favorites. I bet she'll have her own stylist in the white house. I've always thought that Michelle Obama looks great. She is a naturally beautiful women, and her hair and clothes just add to her stylish look.

    1. Would be interesting to know how Michelle Obama uses a stylist. As president will a stylist travel with Hillary? No doubt a hair stylist will be viewed as personal expense. How generous will she be using one? I remember how bad Madeline Albright's hair was when she was SOS. I don't remember a lot of bad hair days for Hillary as First Lady. Her day to day wardrobe seems to be pretty much the same style outfit in many colors and fabrics so perhaps we'll only hear about the gowns she wears on formal occasions.

  4. I think she was running herself ragged as secretary of state. she put on weight and let her hair grow long and poorly styled. As president she will be much better taken care of. You are right about her not caring about appearance when she was young. that had to change when she was First Lady of Arkansas.
I agree with you that with HRC, her hair really makes a difference in her appearance. I want her to look good.

    1. Yes, I agree, I want her to look nice also. Frankly, her hair will be the least of her problems with the Republicans nipping at her heels every minute.

  5. So true. I've noticed that in her pictures. Also true of myself.

    1. She is very attractive when her hair is styled but looks dramatically different when it's not.

  7. I do hope stylist is in the budget. I'm sure one lives in the White House. That shouldn't have to even be a concern for the president.

    1. Will be interesting to see. Have no idea how that will work. I know many more important things will be on her mind but perhaps her staff will look out for her needs.

  10. I'm sure you're right about hair not being a big priority with Hillary, but if I had a chance, I'd tell her to go with shorter hair. I think she looks great with it. I once heard her say that when she was Secretary she couldn't manage her hair so she let it grow. It seemed easier. I don't know about that, but I do know that she will be judged often and harshly on her appearance. I just hope she wins!

  11. Sadly, I believe you're right about a woman's hairstyle. There's so much unfairness in the way men are judged as opposed to a woman.
