Pocket Glasses

Susan took this photo while she was here recently. I found it interesting because of the little tree in the center. I think the area was near the Portland Rose Gardens.

Do you wear glasses on your face or in your pocket? I wore glasses all the time for about 40 years, always the first thing I put on my face every morning. Bob's always worn his glasses in his pocket. To make matters worse he wears them loose in his shirt pocket, not in one of the clip on cases available to people wearing pocket glasses.

I always had one pair of glasses, and always knew where they were because they were secure on my face. Bob has assorted pairs of prescription glasses scattered around the house. Two pair are his latest prescription and only god knows how old the rest are. He's constantly looking for his glasses.

Seems we're always in search mode for a pair of glasses. Things can get tense when we have competing flashlights and cross paths hot on the trail for a lost pair. Sometimes they disappear for extended periods of time. Recently the light dawned while he was in his recliner and told him a pair that had been lost for some time was in the back of his closet in a shirt pocket. Sure enough, there they were.

It's rare when he knows the location of the two latest pairs at the same time. Once his prescription included correction for distance vision I made the argument it was time to quit wearing pocket glasses and wear glasses on his face like the rest of us. He ignored my suggestion.

Recently he called me to the patio door to look at a Bouvier dog that lives near us. He saw a Bouvier, I saw a French bulldog. Considerable difference in size there. It was a bulldog.

This morning he had a lab appointment he's always done alone. I popped out of bed early showered, and dressed before I appeared in the living room. He wanted to know why I was dressed so early. I told him until he has an eye exam and the doctor approves him driving without corrective lens I would be driving.

The ball is in his court now.

  1. I wear glass most of the time but if I'm just walking around the house I can get along without them. I do keep four pair around in different places---in the car, by my bed, by my computer and the ones I wear. I use nail polish to put little marks inside of the bows so I can tell which ones are older just in case I should get the mixed up which I never really do.

    1. I now wear the little half glasses/ readers I think they're called but I wore regular glasses for many years. I have many pairs of the cheap reader glasses in all colors. I can always lay my hand on a pair if I need them. If by chance I should lose a pair I would have lost nothing. Most of them are from the dollar store.

    2. I wish I could still wear the over the counter glasses. It was so much easier not to stress over glasses, if lost.

    1. Once I figured out he was not wearing his glasses when driving I figured it was my responsibility to protect others who might be victims if he made a mistake.

  3. I wear my glasses all the time. I wore contacts when I was younger but it has been just glasses for a long while. Hahaha. I feel lost when they are not on.

    1. Life is much simpler once you stop fighting glasses and just wear them.

  4. Tom graduated from pocket glasses to face glasses a few years ago. I have worn glasses all of the time for about 50 years.

    1. Men seem more prone to pocket glasses. Women, not having pockets, just leave a trail of glasses. So much easier to just put them on and wear them. First thing on in the morning, last thing off at night.

  5. I have to empathize with Bob on this one. I have two problems: keeping up with my glasses and keeping up with my phone. My husband is like you, his glasses go on his face when he gets out of bed and they don't come off until bedtime. I've never heard him ask, "Where are my glasses?" I can always find my nose, though. :)

  6. Oh, I also have lots of those half-readers from Dollar Tree by the computer, the bed, in a jar in the kitchen and on the coffee table in the family room. That helps.

    1. I wore the little half glasses until I needed distance correction and eventually went to trifocals that I wore all the time. Now, after cataract surgery I have a houseful of dollar store glasses again. I was excited to get back to those but actually find them annoying. I'm very close to not needing glasses at all but sometimes they make things a little sharper and then I have to scramble to find a pair. I think I prefer wearing trifocals full time.

  7. I wear glasses on my face, but sometimes I take them off and forget where I put them. There is a terrible irony in having to search for them when everything is a blur. I've tried dangling my glasses around my neck with one of those eyeglass chain thingies, but that didn't work at all for me since I don't really take them off all that often.

    1. I've tried the cord thingy with reading glasses and it didn't work for me either. Wearing glasses all the time just makes life much simpler.

  9. Well I am like Bob in this. I take my glasses off around the house and then have a terrible time finding them because I can't see. I never drive without them though. I can see for reading and other close work without them but i would not be able to see past the hood of the car!

    1. My fight with Bob is because he won't wear them when he drives. I don't care if he blunders around the house half blind but to not wear them when he drives is not acceptable to me. It's unfair to other drivers and dangerous.

  10. I have the cheapo glasses in varying strengths all over the house. Computer glasses, TV glasses, reading glasses by the couch and bed plus SGTM (Sunday go to Meeting) bifocals for dress up. I never lose any for I have glass caddies and leave them where they are useful. At least one thing I don't lose.

    1. I'm seriously considering going back to trifocals. I don't need distance correction but I do need some for reading and the computer. I'd rather wear glasses full time than do all this switching.
