Unteachable or Unwilling

I texted our daughter that her father was unteachable. She texted back "No, he's unwilling." Seems to me there's a fine line between the two.

Bob made waffles that were highly unsuccessful. I knew that if I didn't quickly turn that situation around he would blame the mix and never use it again. Late afternoon the next day I suggested we cook waffles again and experiment until we came up with one that was pleasing to us.

Soon I heard him in the kitchen and figured he was getting out the items we'd need for our cooking experiment. Nope, he'd struck out on his on to repeat the process that had failed the day before.

The day before he'd said "Do I cook this on 3?" "No, 4" said I. He then said "No, I'm sure it's 3." To which I replied "Why did you ask if you knew you were going to cook it on 3?"

The experience did not go well. Is he unteachable or unwilling to learn/change, that is the question?

Remember our son who speaks in one word sentences? Grandson left his glasses here on Saturday.

I texted Rodger and said "Caleb left his glasses over here. Is it all right if I bring them by tomorrow and leave them on the credenza on the porch?"

I thought that was tactful and expected him to reply, "You don't need to do that. We'll come by while we're out and pick them up."

Instead he replied "Yes."

I muttered under my breath and drove by on Sunday afternoon and left them on the credenza on their porch, then sent a text to say they were there.

About two hours later Bob and I were sitting on the patio and around the corner comes Rodger saying he'd come to get the glasses. Grrrrr Said he thought I said they'd be on our patio. What was he thinking? He wasn't, that was the problem.

In this house we are suckers for gadgets, both of us. This one is Bob's new toy. He saw this avocado peeler in a Bed Bath & Beyond ad and was sure he needed one. It remains to be seen how easy it will be to use.

  1. Not sure what to say here, except -Are avocados that hard to peel?
Good luck dealing with your men folk, and that gadget.

    1. The gadget actually worked. Have to admit I was skeptical.

  2. I think we could have a debate on this one. I hear these suggestions in this house.

  4. At least with text messaging we can prove who said what. LOL

  6. Oh, I know just what you mean! Unwilling vs unteachable; if he is convinced that it was the appliance (and not his technique) then it seems the only way to convince him otherwise is for you to demonstrate a different technique that works. Phew! Requires lots of planning and effort to change this perception around. Sounds so familiar to me.

  7. I'm off to Amazon to read reviews of that avocado peeler. It might be just what I need.

  8. Unable or unwilling to learn, I'm afraid, doesn't matter. The effect is the same and you are kind of stuck there with it. You are doing a good job of dealing with it all and your blogging can be more than an outlet for you. Eventually, I see all these posts fleshed out and turned into a book.

  9. Pretty hard to screw up waffles, these days instead of making them from scratch I use a whole wheat box mix.

    1. Hard indeed, and even harder when he had 3 different brands of waffle mix sitting on the counter. He has no patience to wait for them to cook long enough to be crisp. Who wants a half cooked, soggy waffle?
