Texas Hail vs Oregon Hail

Had an early morning text message from our daughter in Texas, "Nickel to quarter size hail leftover from storm that came through. Drive to work was like a winter day, roads and parking lots completely white from hail, just grooves in the road to drive in. Crazy Texas weather!"

"Car was in the garage at home when first round came at 4:15 a.m.  Second came about 7:30 a.m.  Golf ball sized hail at hospital.  Several coworkers had windows or windshields broken."

Fort Worth Zoo

"Several flamingos, a pelican, and other birds at the zoo killed in hail storm."

This is Texas hail.  The roof on our Texas house was replaced twice because of hail damage. We owned a car we called the hail magnet because if there was ever hail it was caught outside.  When hail is in the forecast you see people taking mattresses and other padding outside to secure to the top of their cars for protection.  Under bridges cars are parked as close as possible hoping to avoid hail damage.

After our move to Oregon I was in a store in March or April and looked outside to see it 'sleeting.'  I asked the salesperson how it could be sleeting that time of year only to be informed it was hail.  I was in shock.  I wanted to say, "You call that hail, let me tell you about hail."  Not wanting to make any bigger fool of myself I went on my way with no further comment but thought to myself it surely was not hail.

Even though long time residents of Oregon refer to it as hail it still looks like sleet to me.  I've yet to find the answer to what these people call hail but trust me it isn't hail.

I looked up Graupel but that is water that collects and freezes around a snowflake. It's too late in the year for that.

I suppose it makes no difference but I just hate for Oregonians to go on falsely believing they have hail.

Tried another of Walmart's Seasoned Southern Style product, green beans and potatoes.  I have to say they were right tasty, and something we will purchase again. I could do my own southern style seasoning if I kept a container of bacon grease on the stove top like my mother used for seasoning vegetables but those days are gone.

I don't know a lot about cheese but thought this one looked interesting and it is quite tasty.  I will buy it again.  I'd gone to buy sliced goat cheese, spied this and bought it.

"A Supreme Court Justice may be impeached by the House of Representatives and removed from office if convicted in a Senate trial, but only for the same types of offenses that would trigger impeachment proceedings for any other government official under Articles I and II of the Constitution."

"Only one Supreme Court Justice, Samuel Chase (one of the signatories to the Declaration of Independence), has ever been impeached.  The House of Representatives accused Chase of letting his Federalist political leanings affect his rulings, and served him with eight articles of impeachment in late 1804."

How do you feel about justices receiving lifetime appointments? Would you prefer term limits?

  1. We get "real" hail here in Maine, especially in the summer. Our friens' car roof was ruined by hail. We came home from a trip one August to find leafy vegetables in my garden shredded by hail. We get sleet, too, in the winter months.

  2. That reminds me of here in Arkansas when people groan about the humidity. I want to say--"You think this is humidity?? This would be winter in Florida." But like you I keep my trap shut.
I am good with lifetime appointments. I would hate to go through all this on a regular basis.

  3. For some reason, people like to have the worst of things to brag about. Think it's the nature of the beast.

I used to make BLTs and froze the bacon grease for seasoning in a shallow pie tin. Just broke it into bits and stored it in a baggie.

  4. I remember one year in Chicago when the skies emptied out all its hail and set off everybody's car alarms. The hail was not Texas sized though. There was another year that left our tomatoes smashed. We hadn't experienced the larger hailstones until we were in Kansas and saw cars that had golf ball sized dents pock marking them.

  5. Well, hail, Miss Texas, Northwest hail is just frozen rain.
On a more serious note, how about an age limit for SC Justices, say 75. If you live that long you have to quit and give somebody else a chance.
