Uncle Bernie

I don't know about you but I have had a wonderful time watching the 2016 election cycle unfold.  It's been more entertaining than a circus.  Never could any of us imagined it.  It appears all rules have been tossed out the window and tradition be damned.

Unfortunately my fun time is about over.  Serious is about to take over but before that happens I want to say a few things about Uncle Bernie.  Isn't he a hoot?  His hair causes me to think of him as the mad scientist or the mad professor.

The Burrow's post A Woman and a Jew Run For President brought to my attention that I have heard no mention of religion by either Democrats or Republicans.  I don't think Uncle Bernie considers himself to be a religious man but I think we can assume it is now all right to be a Jew running for President.  It wasn't all right for JFK to be Catholic, and there was muttering about Romney being Mormon but we've heard nothing about being a Jew.

Uncle Bernie has grown on me and I am glad he is running.  In the beginning I considered him a light weight but I am not so sure now.  He has done better than anyone expected.

I am very grateful for the care he has given the younger angry middle class Democrats.  Much nicer than Trump has done with that group of Republicans.

The Republicans have had a field day over Uncle Bernie being a Socialist.  It is true his support is not from older Americans because they remember Marxism.  For them Socialist/Marxist will always be interchangeable.

Dissecting Leftism says Socialism is getting a second life.  If you are in your 20s or 30s Marxist Socialism is ancient history.  These people have only two things than guide their thinking,  the financial crash of 08, and income inequality.

I am enjoying Uncle Bernie.  I feel like he opened a window and let in some fresh air.  I think it is a positive he is in the race.

I like the statement that Bernie Sanders is the eccentric uncle on the porch for Democrats while Donald Trump is as familial as a vacuum cleaner salesman to Republicans.

What do you think about Bernie Sanders or the 2016 election cycle in general?

  1. I like Bernie. He seems to have some solid plans, and he has a strong record behind him. I'm torn between him and Hillary. Oh, by the way, you mentioned JFK as a Catholic and Romney as a Mormon, so you should have mentioned Obama as a Muslim! 😂

    1. I thought about adding Obama and the Muslim thing but since so many people still believe that absurdity I decided not to 'poke the bear' by mentioning it.

  2. The two question marks were supposed to be a smiley face. Something went wonky in the translation.

  3. Suggest, for interesting reading, one might read about the very first group who came to America to escape religious persecution. The first year they practiced communal living with everyone working a collective farm and all getting an equal share of everything. They almost starved to death! The next year each family got a portion of land to farm and they were told, basically, to get to work. Production shot up and their was more than enough produced to eat to get them through the Winter months. Maybe both Democrats and Republicans should study our past before they lead us into repeating it.

    1. We actually have two third party candidates in the race this time. Bernie Sanders is not a Democrat, Donald Trump is not a Republican. I can smile at some of Bernie's ideas. I have a hard time smiling about Trump. Extremes on the left & right. You are so right, both parties would benefit from reading history.

  4. I am a Hillary supporter but I won't move to Canada if Bernie makes it all the way. He has nice ideas but I worry a bit how he will pay for everything.

    1. I have a hard time seeing Bernie in the White House for several reasons. Hillary will work within the system. Bernie will attack the system. I think Democrats would do well to look at the voters following Bernie. They're young with new ideas. They see the failures of the old. If Democrats ignore them they will be on the same path Republicans are on.

  5. I like your last reply, Linda. We who support Hillary have much to learn from Uncle Bernie. I don't see him in the White House either. In his years in Congress he hasn't been able to achieve much, besides always being the scold.
His socialism is more attune to the democratic socialism of the Scandinavian countries, where all who work make a living wage. Of course taxes are higher, prices are high, and the standard of living is lower if you just count the size of houses and how much stuff you can acquire. Very un-American. :-)
As to religion, "To God Be the Glory" was shouted by Cruz at his victory speech. Evangelicals are flocking to Trump and Cruz for some strange reason, since they seem to be the most un-Christ-like. The Republicans haven't really had a go at Bernie yet, taking all their shots at Hillary, but if he is the nominee, they will. As a non-practicing Jew, Bernie will be attacked and the evangelicals will have a heyday. It remains to be seen how that will go over with the general population.
    We haven't seen nothin' yet.

  6. I've enjoyed having Bernie in the race but I only wanted him to have success for a while. It's going to be a hell of a fight against the Republican candidate. If that happens to be Cruz I doubt Bernie is up to the challenge.
