Daughter is Gone

Daughter was here for a week but left this morning. This is the rainy season in Oregon so, as expected, it rained every day but one that she was here.

The zoo gods smiled upon us for a day so we were able to visit the zoo in sunshine without a single raindrop! We wanted to visit Nora, the polar bear, and the three otters we've grown fond of through zoo videos.

I think every person in this part of the state with small children was there. You could hardly walk for little ones zipping around. The zoo has very little flat surface, you're either walking up or walking down. I wasn't sure how I would do given I've exercised very little this winter but I made it. I did take my walking stick (stick, not cane), and it was very helpful.

Every time I visit a zoo I wonder why I put myself through that. Most of the time the animals I'm interested in are not out for viewing or have chosen that time to sleep. Thus was our visit this time. The polar bears were not out for viewing. One otter was out and provided us with quite a show but I was left to wonder if it was worth the effort. Perhaps I'll just keep watching videos.

The next day it was back to rain. I think we've had rain every day for about a month. Pools of water are standing everywhere. That's the norm for this time of year so I'm not complaining. About the time I think I can't stand one more day of rain this place will burst forth in the beauty of spring and I'll forget all about these dreary, rainy days.

Daughter helped me buy frames for new eyeglasses. Only twice in 40 years have I had frames I've dearly loved. I'm hoping that's going to be the case with these. I've had cataract surgery and don't necessarily "need" glasses but I need them just enough it really annoys me. I wear the reader glasses you can buy everywhere but I'm tired of keeping up with them. I often wind up with a pair on top my head, a pair on my face, a pair in my purse, a pair in the car, a pair by my recliner, a pair by the computer, and a pair on the table beside my bed.

What I'm missing is the middle part of trifocals. I've worn trifocals so long I'm lost without them (with lines please). I prefer putting my glasses on first thing every morning and taking them off as I'm crawling into bed at night.  I'm more than sick of chasing glasses.

Heads up Democrats, we have a problem.
I love this woman and can hardly bear to think about the Senate without her,  BUT,  she was born in June 1933. Figure that and you'll see she will be 84 in a few months. She's up for reelection in 20118 for another six year term.

She has said if Hillary had been elected she would have retired. That did not happen. She was born in March 1940 which means she'll turn 77 in a few days.

Born November 1950 he will turn 67 later this year.

In September Bernie will turn 76.

Born June 1949 she will turn 68 this year.

In the past few days I've hear a few names mentioned for possible 2020 candidates.

I ask you to look instead at these names for possible 2020 candidates.

Democrats Strike Back in the Redistricting Wars

  1. I hear there are rumors of Caroline Kennedy running. It's a shame her brother John F. Kennedy Jr. died so tragic and young. 2008/12/16 could have been his time.

    1. Thanks Adam for stopping by. Caroline ( age 50) is certainly a possibility I would think. Have no idea how voters would respond to her. Would the Kennedy name be a plus or minus in today's political environment? My concern is how she comes across on TV. The Kennedy brothers were all dynamic speakers that excited the voters. Caroline doesn't have that. She reminds me more of her mother when she speaks. She's plenty capable I'm sure but not sure if she could bring the voters along with her.

  2. The Dems are an aging group, that's for sure.

Sorry you had so much rain while your daughter was visiting. I'm not much for the zoo. I always feel bad for the animals. April is a rainy month for us, but it will bring flowers :) and warmer weather.

    1. Experience is good but unless you are mentoring those to follow, you run yourself off a cliff. Dems need some new faces.

I've had about all the rain I can stand but I probably need to expect another two weeks of it. It's better than the blizzard weather the northeast is having.

  3. I'm a trifocals with lines person myself and won't be talked out of them. But I hate the frames that are offered now.

Caroline Kennedy won't go anywhere as a presidential candidate in my opinion. Warren is hugely popular but her age will work against her. We need a dark horse to come riding out to save the day.

    1. I do better with the frames out now than when the lens were hardly bigger than a pair of reading glasses. Really hard to fit trifocals in those tiny lens.

I'm feeling pretty good about seeing some new faces in the Democratic Party. I just hope the old will welcome the new. Not always easy to pull off.

  4. I am not much of a fan of zoos any more either, for some of the same reasons.
Yes, we Dems need some new blood in our leadership. I am glad to see some powerful people working on redistricting and I know Jason Kandor is working to combat voter suppression.

    1. I believe things are headed in the right direction for Democrats. I still see evidence of the same old thinking, the inability to think outside the box, but it's matched with much enthusiasm for thinking a new way. I'm pleased to see all the involvement of the 40-50 age voters. Hopefully Trump scared them into action. It's time. I think the path is open now for new voices in the Party.

  5. I got involved in Democratic politics when I was in college and George McGovern was in the primary. At that time, I can tell you, the mainstream, old guard Democrats were very hostile to the youngsters. I agree wit you that we need to welcome and mentor new faces and new ideas about how to get things done.

    1. The Party cannot continue as is. We have to have some new faces. We have to be bold, may have to primary a few who think the place will fall apart without them. My only exception is Diane Feinstein. In my opinion, she is incredibly important right now. Right now Democrats need her on the Intelligence Committee. Hopefully in 2018 things will be better. Some are collecting money for her to run again but I doubt that's wise. I enjoyed having a young president and hope we can do that again.

  6. Michelle Obama?? She is popular enough. Surely someone will rise to the top.

    1. Michelle Obama is probably the most unpolitical person alive. On election night she went to bed her regular time. She hates political debates and has only watched her husband's. I think she believes there's got to be a better way for her to serve her country.

  7. I know you enjoyed your daughter's visit! Daughters are wonderful at helping us in making choices. Visiting the zoo gave you a good amount of exercise even if you didn't get to see your favorite critters. Plus - spending time with your daughter more than made up for their absence.

    1. Having a visit from Susan is the best thing that happens to us. Our son lives here but he's married with a child so the relationship is a little different. Good but different. Susan is single. When she comes she devotes all her attention to us. She helps us in so many ways.

  8. Eric Garcetti, mayor of Los Angeles has impressed me though I live in a city in northeast L. A. County. He was re-elected by a large majority. He may more appropriately need to become our next Calif. Gov. in a few years. Dem. Party has an articulate, hard working, effective administrator who communicates well with voters, gets job done, has workable ideas, implements policy, addresses problems to resolve them. I formulate this view from paying attention to politics, governing there, listening to all-news radio from L.A. which addresses our whole So Cal area especially County and city. Have listened to many regular appearances he's had on program answering hard questions from newsmen, callers invited to phone in their questions. Remember his name.

    1. I've written down the name of Eric Garcetti and will begin watching him. He does look like he might make a good governor for California. Thanks for making me aware of him.

  9. Those are all my favorite people. I especially love Elizabeth Warren. She is so courageous! And oh yes, I love Diane Feinstein too and definitely Chuck Shumer.

I haven't been to a zoo in such a long time. I do like them, but feel sad to see the animals in cages.
