Ice Boxes to Refrigerators

Remember Ice Boxes?
My uncle was the ice man in our little town. He delivered ice to homes all over town for years. In time word came that something new was coming that would put him out of work, electric refrigerators that could make ice. That time came. He had to lock up the ice house and move to another town to find another kind of work.

Today we're moving from a product society to a technology society. People in jobs producing products are losing their jobs. They're angry.

Pussy Hats

I made a pussy hat.
I enjoyed making it more than Bob enjoyed modeling it.

Today I read a blog post about a woman's efforts to knit one.
Roll on, Pink River, Roll On!

Remember Them?

It seems so long ago.

  1. I recently had a vintage ice box restored to its original glory. Mine is fancier than the small on you pictured. But I get your point and think that often when I hear people complain about job loses in coal country.

I delivered two pussy cat hats yesterday. My niece belongs to a 'resist' group and I'm very proud of her and was happy to make her a hat.

Have you heard the conspiracy theory that Obama is behind an effort to get #45 impeached?

    1. It's interesting how loud Republicans are complaining about fake news when they are the absolute worst at fake news and conspiracy theories. The WH is nothing but a fake news, conspiracy theory factory. They've lied so long about Obama they no longer recognize facts when they see them.

  2. Every time I see them now - Woodward & Bernstein - I remember seeing a middle aged talking head back in the day who referred to them as these "two kids" who cracked the whole thing wide open. When you look at them now, it's hard to believe they were those "two kids."

    1. I don't think I'd ever seen this photo. I don't remember them being so young but probably that's because I was young also. Saw Bernstein interview recently. Apparently Bob Woodward handled the fame well but it almost destroyed Carl Bernstein.

    2. I was a fan of Nora Ephron. Her son did a documentary on her. She was married to Carl Bernstein. His son interviewed him, and he spoke a little about her. They were "the" couple in NYC back in their youth. The marriage ended badly. I don't guess any marriage ends well. It's hard to look at someone in their later years and imagine them when they were young... sometimes even if you saw them when they were young.

  3. I cannot understand why people are angry about the change in the job market. It has always changed, and people need to change, too. Why is that so hard to do?

    1. Like you, I don't see this as 'new' in our society. The only thing I can think of is the rust belt workers may have moved less often than workers living on the two coasts. Perhaps they have deeper roots in their communities and can't bear the thought of having to move to find work. It's beyond me to figure it out.

  4. Lots of topics in this post. We could cut our own ice and store it. then we filled our icebox when needed. Now where would Texas find ice?

    1. In Texas ice was frozen in a factory 45 miles from our town. Big blocks were loaded on a truck and driven out to small towns. My Uncle sealed it in a insulated building. There he would cut it into smaller blocks and put them in the back of his pick up and delivered the blocks around our town. Houses were never locked. He would deliver the ice blocks inside and fill the ice boxes. He was about 50 years old and had never married. Along his route he met widow McCuan and they married.

    2. Thanks for the reply. You describe a whole world I never knew existed. I always thought ice for the ice box came from the frozen lake. I never thought about places that didn't have natural ice.

  5. Yup, yup, nope, yup!
Yes, in today's changing times, you might need to relocate and retrain.
Yes, Patty is wonderful! We will reelect her as long as she is willing to serve.
Nope, I'm not learning knitting, or wearing a pussy hat. One of my Trumpster Facebook friends called them vagina hats.
Yes, I remember those guys. Nixon hated the media too, but he couldn't hide from them.

    1. Seriously doubt Susan or I will ever wear our pussy hats but it was fun making them. We call them our 'protest' hats. She would not dare wear one in Texas.

It takes time for all this to play out and I'm not a patient person.
