Bye Bye Crocs

Bob has had a favorite pair of Crocs for years. For a very long time I've been telling him they were dangerous, that they could cause him to fall. He wasn't buying it. It was easier to get him to stop driving than to give up those beloved Crocs.

Last week a sister-in-law fell and broke her hip. She wasn't wearing Crocs, and was inside when she fell but that's the third bad fall in the family in as many years. I began again talking to him about how dangerous his Crocs were.

Perhaps because he's feeling more vulnerable. Perhaps because I also might have mentioned the necessity of a nursing home if he broke a hip, but wonder of wonders, those Crocs went to the dumpster.

While Susan was here she took him out and bought these Skechers that should be comfortable and make him much more steady on his feet.

  2. As another person who loves Crocs and knows I shouldn't wear them, that's quite an accomplishment to get Bob to give his up. In my defense I don't keep mine when they start to lose their tread on the bottom. I replace them often. But good job, Linda! Though do watch him with those new shoes. If he shuffles instead of picking up his feet, they could give him trouble until he gets used to them.

  3. Seniors fall often so they don't need any help by wearing improper footwear.

  4. We just heard today that one of our good friends, who is 89 years old, fell and broke her hip. I fear a nursing home is where she will have to go. I hope she survives this.

  5. It's true that gym shoes are much safer. They used to keep telling us that we needed to wear safer shoes in Hawaii than flip flops. I was wearing flip flops a few years ago when someone walking too close behind me stepped on my flip flops and I went down head first! Scary! Very scary! And painful! I was lucky that time. I don't wear flip flops outside the house now.

  6. I love Skechers and that is all I wear after my knee and toe surgeries. I tell Louis Dean all the time - BE CAREFUL! Don't fall! Do NOT hurt yourself. Try your best to not get sick. Recovery is not easy when you are 80!

  7. Yes, staying on our feet, especially when we're older is very important. We just don't have the residuals to expedite our recovery as rapidly and as well as when we're younger once we need fixin'. Balance can also be an issue for some, which can sometimes be helped with Physical Therapy.

  8. Falling is a major worry as we lose our ability to bounce right back up. I'm glad you were able to get through to Bob on this one.

  9. My mother was given to falling inside the house, even though she wore entirely sensible shoes. We finally realized it was because she shuffled her feet, and the soles weren't moving across the carpet. She'd keep moving, but her feet wouldn't, and down she'd go.

I've fallen four times in the past 25 years, but in each incident, it was something external that got me, like a boat line taut across a dock, or a sprinkler head hidden in grass. So far so good on balance issues. I keep working on attentiveness. :-)

  10. Never got into Crocs but know those who do are loyal. Also heard they are dangerous so it is great he has decided on having a good foundation.

  11. I love Skechers. I don't think it is a coincidence that my tripping ended when I started wear Skechers.

  12. The comment above about shuffling feet and falling has made me think. I do tend to shuffle my feet but since I have wood floors it hasn't really been a problem. I'm going to keep that in mind in the future.

  13. I love my Skechers that I bought more than two years ago. It is my most expensive sneakers, but it is very comfortable and last a long time. I am glad Bob gave up his Crocs.

  14. Falls can be bad for anyone, but especially when we've been around for a few years. Mentioning the nursing home would surely make me relinquish my Crocs If I wore them. Glad Bob relented. Good decision.
