Sea Lions

I'm counting on a day trip in June to visit some sea lions. I am not a native Oregonian and I've never seen these creatures in real life.

People say ugly things about sea lions but this looks to me like a face any mother could love.

It appears they've made enemies because they eat the endangered salmon in the Columbia River. Fishermen are not happy.

Local residents do not like them because they bark.

They also stink I'm told.

There are hundreds of them.

I expect to find these creatures in Astoria, Oregon. Tourists love them. Cruise ships have them listed as must see attractions when they stop at Astoria. Local residents are angry on both sides of the issue.  Just like politics, some defend them and others want to kill them. I need to check this out.

  1. There are good and bad views of these creatures. I wouldn't mind seeing a bunch of them, myself.

    1. People have very strong opinions both ways. I don't want to get in a political war over sea lions, I just want to see some.

    1. Exactly, I don't want to marry them or live with them, I just want to stand and watch them from somewhere safe, and hopefully upwind from them.

  3. Since we don't have to live with them, we love them. We have stopped several times in Astoria on our way to our Rockaway Beach cabin to see them. The problem is they have taken over the docks and some of the docks were in danger of sinking. And then, of course, there is the eating of the salmon. Of course that is a problem only because we have depleted our salmon supply by over fishing and destroying habitat.

    1. It's amazing how man and nature can never seem to live in harmony one or the other always messes up.
